Did this part of the full loop to Hobbs Cabin and back. 0.1 Entrance to Savage Station Camp Area to left. This is a three day two night backpacking trip in the Savage Gulf State Natural Area in Eastern Tennessee on November 27 - 29, 2019. I have spent a couple of long Saturday’s running through the beautiful Savage Gulf State Natural Area this winter/spring. The track that we took was about 5.5 miles when all was said and done, but this trail begs for off the main trail excursions. Maybe spring or fall would be better times? Very calm and serene though. The trailhead is located at the Savage Gulf Ranger Station. Maybe we’re all looking for something different but my hike ended with a simple “thank you” to the ranger holding it down. The park’s more than 50 miles of hiking trails, including the marathon course, are open year-round. We will hike in via the Savage Day loop along Savage Creek. nice and peaceful trip. It offers a scenic overlook and 3 to 4 waterfall views depending on how adventurous you want to be. Went with my 8 year old and it was about the perfect distance and difficulty doing the 4 mile loop for her. Because of of the trail’s distance, I think that intermediate-beginners could pull off this trail pretty easily. I spent some time backpacking in the Gulf last year but I wanted to get a feel for running longs distances on the very technical trail. Hobbs Cabin itself is quite nice for a primitive Cabin. The true Savage Day Loop doesn’t include Savage Falls, but it is a quick .3 miles from the trail and well worth your time. Note to fill up on water for the night right before the day loop ends.
